For Elijah Nabimanya and Dorah Nyamwiza, the founders of Omangwa Safaris Limited, the journey started with a shared love for exploration, a deep connection to their homeland, and a simple conversation about showing the world the beauty of Uganda.
Both founders come from Nyabushozi County in Kazo District, a landscape of rolling hills, open savanna and rich rural culture in western Uganda. For Elijah, nature was always more than scenery, it was a calling. From an early age he felt drawn to wildlife and the natural world, a fascination that eventually led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Tourism. That academic path allowed him to turn a childhood passion into a professional mission: connecting travellers with Africa’s landscapes in meaningful ways.
Dorah’s journey followed a similarly instinctive path. Friends often joked that she was “born to be a tour guide.” Curious, observant and naturally sociable, she possessed a gift for discovering hidden places and sharing them with others. What attracted her to tourism was not only the thrill of adventure but the freedom and human connection that travel offers, the chance to meet people from around the world and create experiences that leave lasting memories.
The two first met more than a decade ago while studying at the same high school. Dorah joined the school a year below Elijah, and through mutual friends, including Elijah’s cousin, their friendship gradually grew. Even after leaving school, they remained in touch, often meeting over coffee to exchange ideas about life, work and travel.
During one of those conversations, a shared vision began to take shape. Both had explored much of Uganda and had seen firsthand the extraordinary diversity the country offers, dense jungles alive with primates, wide savannas where wildlife roams freely, vibrant cities, tranquil lakes and welcoming communities. Yet they felt that many travellers were still unaware of Uganda’s true richness.
The idea was simple: create a company that would introduce visitors to the authentic Uganda they knew and loved. From that conversation, Omangwa Safaris Limited was born.
The name “Omangwa” comes from the local dialect Kankomangwa, meaning “Woodpecker.” The choice was symbolic. Woodpeckers inhabit the savanna woodlands, open plains and mountainous forests that define much of East Africa’s landscape, the very environments where Omangwa Safaris operates today.
